Billy Joel released his first hit song, "Piano Man", in 1973. He has had Top 10 hits in the '70s, '80s, and '90s; is a six-time Grammy Award winner. He was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame (1992), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1999).
Never a critic's favorite, the pianist emerged as one of the most popular singer/songwriters of the latter half of the '70s. Joel's music consistently shows affection for Beatlesque hooks and a flair for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway melodies. His fusion of two distinct eras made him a superstar and he racked an impressive string of multi-platinum albums and hit singles in the late 70's.
